The demand for floral design classes in both NYC and LA is increasing more than ever now! People are just ga-ga over floral design, probably because it's so fun and you get to feel like a kid or an artist in that moment. I've been doing corporate classes for team-building and just for something fun as a treat for their staff. I've also began to teach at Brooklyn Brainery, which is an awesome little spot and has a million classes to chose from. My Intro and Wedding classes sold out in a jiffy. Some students in the wedding class were there because they couldn't get in the first one. I will be teaching regular classes there including Advanced, Wood Boxes, and Garden Baskets. I love inspiring people and this truly isn't work for me. I've gotten the nicest emails from students after each class, and it really makes it all worth it!
Check out my tips for how to keep flowers fresh! I loved shooting this segment and the reporters couldn't be nicer. We had a lot of laughs behind the scenes. They like my soda dig and said Mayor Bloomberg would be proud;) I absolutely love this color scheme. It is so elegant and classy while incorporating the colors we think of when we hear Santa Barbara. Carrie's wedding took place at the 5 star hotel Bacara; with it's sprawling views and gorgeous architecture, this is the venue of choice for those that want a creme de la creme wedding (no, they didn't pay me to write that;) I booked this wedding through my friend Stacey of Stacey Lynn Design. The couple lives in Seattle, and we had never met until the day of the wedding! Through an extensive phone consultation and numerous emails, we were able to nail down this look. They had a lot of small details for their guests including this Cigar Bar. The guests danced the night away to a live band. We used mini green hydrangea, calla lilies, cymbidium orchids, and tulips mainly.
Every time I watch a show on Netflix (eh-hem House of Cards), I then spend three times the amount of time researching the show, characters, and whatever else I click on in the black hole that is Wikipedia because lets face it, seeing what goes on behind the scenes is way more interesting.
Here's some photos snapped by my brother Matthew Cylinder, the extremely talented photographer that you should hire for anything you could possibly need photographed (your pet rat, proof that your roommate did in fact leave the dirty dishes in the sink, etc). I'm wearing Smythe and Krisa, which I got from my client and dear friends at the PR firm Bollare. I'm standing with Erin the publicist, from celebrations.com who is telling me very important things at 6am! There was a crafts service table, but if was for Anderson Cooper 360 (I'm being totally serious). Through unusual circumstances (I posted, she responded) I met Britt of At Large PR based in Vegas and serving worldwide. Holy cow, this woman is ON IT. I mean she went above and beyond anything I expected. In less than two weeks I had about five blogs wanting me to contribute and will be shooting a show for Creative Living on PBS this Fall! How cool is that?! And albeit we've only talked via email (my preference), I feel like I know her so well, in such a short amount of time. We're both busy gals, so working together online is perfect. Between bouncing back and forth between the coasts, gearing up for a tv show and running Flour LA (not to mention this site), it's been nonstop. But that's light compared to Britt's schedule of creating press releases, ghostwriting, doing social media and working on a gazillion other projects. I'm way way behind on all the research and materials I need to give her, but know that when I do, it's about to explode even more. It's been such a fun journey and I feel truly blessed! Def hit Britt up!
In September we did Rachell's wedding in Solvang, and today it was featured on Nicole Miller. Rachelle is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside.
I feel so incredibly blessed to get the chance to meet with, and work with, two of the top people in design. David Stark Design is probably the most sought after designer in the US, and one of the best in the world. He started as a painter, then florist (I own a couple of his books) and then full on event design. As you can see from the first photo below, he uses a lot of materials, such as these paper centerpieces. He went to RISD, where my bro went. Speaking of RISD, I've had the pleasure of meeting all sorts of alumni from there and they truly are some of the best artists out there, in all fields, from graphic design to glass-blowing, sculpture to fashion design. I also met with Emily Thompson Design. She's on this month's cover of Martha Stewart Living - not too shabby, huh. She's also done the White House holiday flowers. Her shop in Dumbo, Brooklyn is so freakin cute. Even though I'm in NYC to focus on writing and the show, I couldn't help but get back into some floral design, especially when it's the chance to work for really great, amazing, talented, and inspiring people!
